Indulgent Weekend of Bliss

It’s been a busy week. Both at work and at home. Last thursday, Hiyas came to visit and so began indulgent weekend of fun. We watched a couple of movies, played a few games, ate at some great places and laughed nearly the whole time. Gosh, this post is coming so late but here were the highlights from the last weekend:

Thursday, after eating a big Thai dinner, we played Rock Band for a few hours. Lyndon sang a few songs! He was not very good (but neither am I, so who am I to judge?) but it was so very cute and it made me proud.

Then, on Friday, for work – we had a team building offsite. Really, it was a chance for us all to relax and celebrate all the hard work we’ve done in the past year as well as have the holiday party we never got to have because we were all so busy. We gathered at my boss’s cabin at the lake – what!? It was a gorgeous surprise. It was beautiful and sunny outside and we were able to eat, drink and be merry.

I got a magnifying glass at Anthropologie. I really like odd, old looking things.

Saturday we watched Eclipse.

I enjoyed it. As I’ve come to like the movies more and more, I’ve come to like the Bella-Edward love conversations less and less. I know they talk a lot in the book but it seems so much more obnoxious when you have to watch it. But don’t misunderstand. I enjoyed the movie overall. I loved the action and history and wished there were so much more. Supernatural fights are always so exciting to watch because there’s so much they’re able to get away with. Defying natural laws of physics a lot of the time. It can be a lovely dance. I enjoyed the stories and history of Jasper and Rosalie. Jasper is so adorable and I’m happy they’re fixing up his hair. <3! Favorite thing: the wolves. Not necessarily the characters..I’m talking about the actual giant wolf animal. I would want to wrap my arms around them and squeeze. I know they’re supposed to be kind of scary but I found them really cute! I want my kitties to be giant like that! Dream come true! I have a huge soft spot for animals.

Saturday night, we went to Lark.

Oh my my my my my. I loved it. The chef – Johnathan Sundstrom. The food was amazing. It’s small plate dining so we ordered lots of plates where we were able to have a few bites each of each plate. I enjoy this way of eating because it allows to try many different foods. With all the different (and yummy) flavors, our mouths were alive with surprise and delight. I was a little hesitant at going to a place where I’d have to order 3 plates of food at once to enjoy the experience. But I was told once (by a very experienced foodie) that one’s mouth only tastes the first few bites of a plate. So, a giant plate of something loses it’s glamour after the first probably quarter of consumption. This foodie recommended Lark. And boy, was he right. This is a good way to eat! This time, we skipped the cheeses and charcuterie and went straight for the meats and fish dishes. Next time, I definitely want to do some veggies and cheeses.

On Sunday we saw Inception.

I really enjoyed it. I didn’t find it overwhelming or difficult to understand. Overthinking and trying to ground everything in reality is what could cause a problem understanding. But being open to the story and the concept creates a wonderful world where lots of things are possible. The whole idea of dreams and dreaming and the architecture of it all makes perfect sense. It’s as if something we’ve all been thinking about on a subconscious level has come to life in Christopher Nolan’s writing and direction. Notable things: Joseph Gordon-Levitt is extremely well dressed and pressed in this movie. Marion Cotillard is great at playing intense slightly crazy and beautiful loves. <3 Ken Watanabe, I get weak for older, handsome well put together japanese men. Leonardo DiCaprio is better as a grown up. I like this tiny top and the idea of totems. I want to carry one around myself. Must find totem…. Favorite thing: (It might be a spoiler but with this movie you have to see it for it to make sense.) The scenes where they cut between the first kick and Arthur gets slowly thrust to the side in slow motion, the music’s playing and his head and limbs tilt and get flung up into the air. Also, I very much love the zero gravity flying around on the ceilings and hallways of the hotel. Lovely beautiful.

There was much much much much more. But this post has taken me days to write in between work and life. I can’t seem to find my groove. Our waltzing days have come to an end. We may take other classes, we’ll see. Maybe something less rigid and easier to follow than the waltz even though for a short time I felt fancy.

Happy Friday!

Squid Ink Sauce Fail.

Tonight, Lyndon and I made spaghetti with squid ink sauce. Fail. Too much parsley. Lyndon said the recipe was a ‘guy’ recipe because things weren’t measured out and precise. ‘A bunch of parsley’ could amount to different things to different people and depending on which supermarket you get the parsley. The garlic bread was good. Lyndon salvaged the squid we used in the pasta sauce and we’ll create something different tomorrow (minus the parsley).

Caught up on LOST and V. (! V spoiler begin ! ) How dumb looking was Anna’s teeth at the end? I would have thought it would have looked more scary and badass. And gross! – pregnancy rat craving? No thank you. Put down the rodent, Val!!!  (! V spoiler end ! ) Best thing Lyndon said about V: ‘He looks like Mark Singer and William H. Macy rolled up in one.’ Guess which V star he’s talking about? answers next time thanks for playing bye.

Cheeseburger!

I ate a cheeseburger tonight for the first time in months. I think my stomach went into shock. I still substituted the beef patty for a turkey patty skipped on the dressing but still….OMG I thought I was going to die I was so happy. Lyndon, of course, went all out and got a burger that was smothered in cheese and bacon (bastard) and really salty yummy cajun fries. Cheeseburger, I love you.

This weekend I’m going to make churros for dinner with my brother and sister-in-law. It’s taco night. I’m going off track a little this weekend but it’s kind of a reward for being so good for the last couple of months. There’s been progress so I’m hopeful for the future.

Now, if we can squeeze in shooting some zombies I can go to sleep happy.

Bastille

Last night, Lyndon and I ate at Bastille. Birthday Dinner! I didn’t get to do my daily post yesterday because I was running around like a crazy person. Thank god for online shopping, home delivery since Lyndon was able to receive his birthday gift at just the right time! He got an engraved ipod shuffle. Holy bejeezus that thing is tiny!

I left work late, fought with traffic and got home just in time to throw on a change of clothes and leave to make our reservation. We made it just in time. Our meal was heavenly. It was the first time in a few weeks that I didn’t think at all about what I ate and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I love the atmosphere of this place. The lighting is low enough to be romantic but bright enough that you can see your date’s face. I adore the white subway tile and black steel beams. Am now thinking of how to incorporate it into home kitchen.

Favorite thing? Frites with truffle aioli.

Love-Hate Blue Cheese

I used to hate blue cheese. It was stinky and tasted like mold (because it was moldy! Duh!) Somehow, one day I decided that I like it. I can eat blue cheese! I’ve had it on a burger. A burger! Who knew?! And I especially like it crumbled on my salads. I’ve been addicted to making a sweet and kind of salty salad (mostly sweet) with these ingredients:

  • mixed green lettuce
  • crumbled blue cheese
  • fuji apple cubes
  • red seedless grapes
  • candied walnuts
  • lemon vinegrette or creamy balsamic vinegrette

Y-U-M.

My mouth loves it. Flavor explosion. My stomach hates it. It fights me afterwards. Which is kind of sick because I eat this almost everyday for lunch at work. Then, I’ll have to run down to my secret bathroom on the 2nd floor of the building where I work – the one in the dark part of the 2nd floor, the one where the fluorescent lights aren’t always on as if no one’s been there in days/months.  I’m sure it’s the blue cheese. And still I do it. I torture myself. I can only hope that I’m slowly training my body to be stronger.  Until then, that’s where you’ll find me. Every day around 230pm. 2nd floor bathroom. Wear protective eye gear. It’ll sting your eyes.

Just a random Birthday thing

Beware: this post is a mountain of randomness mostly about my birthday today and other things that are on my mind.

Yesterday, in a birthday conversation with mama she asked me if I feel any different (being another year older). I said that I didn’t feel any different than last year.  She then kind of laughed.  But in a kind of strange way.  I don’t think what I said was haha funny.  But it was kind of a secret laugh.  Like a ‘ just you wait until you’re 78 years old and your kids are grown’ kind of laugh.  I still don’t know what to make of it.

This morning, my cats and my husband all greeted me a happy birthday and made me feel warm and special.  I would have stayed in bed with all of them for the remainder of the day and been completely content.

Today, I was treated to a feast of sugar for lunch.  After a morning of meetings I didn’t have time to find regular lunch food to eat.  My sweet, sweet workmates scheduled a birthday party at 12.30 so I went and ate brownies, banana chocolate chip bread, and hot chocolate with a mountain of whipped cream.  It was lovely and I thought I would die from the kindness and the sugar.  They all sang happy birthday which made me feel very VERY embarrassed and ready to hide under the table.   I am filled with so much love for the people at my workplace who have become my friends.  I have never before worked in a place surrounded by thoughtful, caring people.

I listened to the Killers in my headphones all day.  The Killers make me beyond happy.  My very favorite song of the moment: I can’t stay, track 7 from the Day & Age album.  It’s been in heavy rotation for the last few days.

Today, Carole told everyone it was my birthday and made me feel embarrassed when people I didn’t really know awkwardly wished me a happy birthday.  It was funny.

I’m wearing a new black trapeze jacket from old navy that I love a lot with a very bright pink dress – birthday gift to myself.

scrap_esme_content.jpgI’ve been doing random drawings every now and again of the Twilight peeps.  This is a sketch of Esme as I picture her.  I drew Carlisle but am not completely happy with it since the expression I gave him looks kind of constipated.  It went into the garbage.

I’ve had the 2 same movies from netflix for a month.  Holy crap!  And it’s not like they’re bad movies.  They’re very very fantastic movies.  I haven’t gotten around to putting them in the dvd player and hitting play.  What. the. hee-haw. is my problem?  Have I just gotten so fat and lazy that I can’t make the effort to put a movie in and hit play rather than conveniently pressing buttons and watching streaming netflix movies on the xbox?  I believe so.  This I need to work on.

Everytime I sneeze and sniffle a little bit, I worry I have the swine flu.  But after a minute I forget.

Lyndon just walked in the room picking his nose and I asked him if he was giving me a booger for my birthday.  He said, yes.

Really, I haven’t been watching my netflix movies because I’m busy devoting over 50 hours (wtf!) game time to this game.  And I’m going to continue staying up late and playing even tonight.

Tonight, I’ll be dining at a lovely french restaurant called Campagne.  I’m excited and ready.  I’ve starved myself all day (aside from all the sugar) to devote all my attention to the fantastic french cuisine I am about to consume.

There’ll be more to come, I’m sure.
